Tools used in drawing:

The paper that you use for drawing varies in texture and quality. Beginners can use low grade paper for practicing. Drawing Layout:

Before you begin to draw a layout for your sketch is important. Dimensions of the subject to be drawn have to be measured. This can be done by using your finger on a certain point and measuring and comparing the sizes of other objects around the subject.

For drawing a photograph on to your sheet you can use a proportional divider that scales the photograph to give the required scaling ratio. For this purpose a grid can also be used.

Tone: Different shades and shadows can be brought to life by using materials like graphite. For blending purposes chamois and tortillon blending stump can be used.

Illumination: Lighting effect is very important for an artist. Placing lights at different angles produce varying results on the same subject. A careful study of illumination is essential.

Drawing Techniques

Different strokes in drawing are used to create the shades and tones. The different techniques used are as follows:

Hatching:
  • This is used in drawings made of ink and is made up of parallel lines in groups.
Cross hatching:
  • This is used to give a dark tone and is used in different directions.
Broken hatching:
  • This is done in intermittent lines and is used to produce a light tone.
Stippling:
  • This technique involves placement of dots to produce the necessary shade.
Slinky stroke:
  • This stroke tapers down with a cone like appearance. This is used for shading.
Squiggle stroke-
  • This type of stroke is used for shading small delicate areas.
Blending-
  • The blending effect can be done with charcoal or graphite

The following drawing tips will help you start drawing:
  • Start drawing basic shapes like a square, triangle, rectangle, and a perfect circle. After this try drawing different kinds and sizes of rectangles, squares and circles. Practice drawing perfect straight lines curves and spirals.
  • Place a simple object in front of you and visualize it at an angle of 45 degrees and break its shape in your artistic mind and start drawing each part at a time.
  • First draw the object in lighter shade and make necessary corrections .Once satisfied, you can use darker pencil.
  • Draw the same object several times till you get accustomed to it. Practice makes you perfect.
  • Once you are good at drawing simple objects then shift to complicated ones.
  • Practice shading right from the beginning.
  • Keep all your work so that you can look back and check your improvement.
  • Use HB pencils of different shades and experiment with them.

Drawing Graffiti letters

Graffiti was first seen in the Roman era where drawings were done on the wall. Since then it has become an art form and each one can develop their own unique style of graffiti. To embark on graffiti writing, first study graffiti work of people around you or work of serious graffiti writers. Start by making pencil graffiti of your name. Select a style in which you want to draw your graffiti. You can use your creativity to add details to your graffiti. Once you are done with that, trace it or make a copy of it. After darkening your graffiti with dark pencil, you can fill it with colours.Practice will make you perfect. Illegal graffiti drawing should be avoided.
